Mayors Report April 2018

April being one of the shorter months in the year has zoomed past. The month started with two visits to Penarth to support the Mayor of Penarth’s charity events a table top sale in the Paget Rooms on the 14th April and a coffee morning in the Mayor’s parlour on the 20th April. The Memory Jar in Cafe in Cowbridge celebrated its 1st Birthday on 3rd April with a huge birthday cake and lots of fun including a Laurel and Hardy film. Photos and reports of this event were covered in the Gem 12th April edition.

My consort Rob and I were invited to Cor Bro Ogwr’s Spring Concert in All Saints Church, Porthcawl. The programme included  Vesperae Solennes by Mozart and Nelson Mass by Haydn. The choir were joined by 4 excellent soloists Erin Alexander – Soprano, Polina Bielova – Mezzo-Soprano, Ross Wilson –Tenor and Edmund Caird. The choir and orchestra were conducted by Rosie Howarth. It was a superb evening.

On the 1st April the RAF celebrated its 100th Birthday and it is also the 80th anniversary of St Athan.  Rob and I attended a national service of celebration at St Mary’s Church in Swansea on the 21st April conducted by the Most Reverend John Davies, Archbishop of Wales to mark the centenary of the RAF. Many dignitaries were present including MP’s, AM’s, Air Marshal Sean Reynolds  and many Mayors including the Lord Mayor of Swansea  and the Lord Mayor of Cardiff. After the service there was the RAF Centenary Parade and Marchpast. The Parade Commander was the Wing Commander Stephen Rowley from MOD St Athan. With other Mayors we followed the parade on foot to the Brangwyn Hall. Wing Commander Stephen Rowley was a special guest at our coffee morning on the 7th April where he came to view a RAF exhibition in the Cowbridge Museum. The Mayor of Barry hosted a RAF 100 Service of Thanksgiving at St Mary the Blessed Virgin in Barry on the 22nd April.  Part of the celebrations included the arrival of the RAF Baton Relay into the Vale of Glamorgan having come from the Swansea event. The specially designed baton is visiting 100 sites associated with the RAF in 100 days. The event also marked the 80th anniversary of the RAFA Barry Branch No. 247.

Rob and I were pleased to support the Mayor of Llantwit’s charity fund raising by attending a High Tea in the West House Country Hotel on the 21st April.

On the 30th April Rob and I attended the book launch of I, Iolo in Cowbridge Library. The book was written by Gareth Thomas and readings from the book on the night were by Danny Grehan as Iolo and Eiry Palfrey as Peggy. The event was packed and highly entertaining and we all learnt even more about Iolo Morganwg.

The current Deputy Mayor Cllr Terry Williams will be taking over from me on the 22nd May with Cllr Alec Trousdell becoming Deputy Mayor. Many congratulations to both of them.
